I first met John during a Bluegrass festival in Lexington, Kentucky in the earlier part of the 70’s.. My good friend and fellow musician, Tommy Hough, was playing bass for all the headliners at the festival. Tommy told me to come backstage and there he was sitting down and talking with John Hartford. Tommy introduced me to John. I was thrilled to meet John since I was a big fan and had kept up with him for several years. He was a very nice guy and we spoke easily together. About a year or so later, I went to a John Hartford concert on the U.K. campus. I was sitting in about the 5th row. When John took a break he looked up at me and motioned for me to come up. I was shocked that he remembered me! I’ve met a lot of “famous” musicians in my life, mainly my decades of living in Atlanta, all of them very nice people. I can tell you that John Hartford was one of the nicest guys on earth. I was heartbroken when I learned of his illness and then his passing. God Bless you John.
